While many of you are probably in the dreamland of night, I am on the other side of the world in daylight taking on the challenge of learning to play the hulusi - a type of Chinese bamboo flute. When I was in Harbin last month I walked past a woman selling them on the street, and after thinking for a moment, "This can't be too hard to learn," I did an about-face. After bargaining with her a bit (and still paying too much, I discovered), I became the owner of the instrument.
The next question, "Who will teach me?" Fortunately, with the help of a Russian music teacher here at the university I was directed to a music student versed in the hulusi. So, the lessons have begun, and maybe someday I'll play you a tune!
