Yesterday morning found me at the train station, ready to discover the "town" of FuYu north of Qiqihar....50 minutes by train. What my host described as a town was more like a city to me....about the size of Syracuse in population. Like so many places in China, the old one-story, single family, small rectangular houses are gradually being torn down to be replaced by lovely new apartment buildings. I was impressed by the cleanliness of the city, generally free of liter and dirtiness.
Back to the beginning of my day - as I was standing among the hordes waiting to board the train for FuYu, the thought came to me you might like a taste of what I was experiencing. In this video I'm in about the middle of the long "line" and they're just getting ready to open the gates.

And now for my hosts, James and his wife. They've been married for a couple years, both teaching at the senior high school. James teaches English and his wife biology. We're standing at the entrance to the high school (a new building built in 2003).
We ended our day at the ice cream shop. The interesting thing about this place are the seats. We're sitting in wicker swings suspended from the ceiling! Not a bad idea for someone to try in the States.
