It's Sunday afternoon. At 1:00 this morning I was woken out of a sound sleep to fireworks across the lake! "Oh, boy, who's firing those off this time of night? Probably some foreign students who've been out drinking." With those as the gist of my thoughts and being wide awake, I got up for a couple hours before returning to my sleeping spot.
Fireworks are common around here, every week, daytime - nighttime, it doesn't matter. They can start as early as 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning. (But 1 AM is not usually an acceptable time!) Fireworks are used to celebrate special occasions such as the opening of a new store or the completion of some important phase in a construction project. And who knows what else. They aren't generally spectacular, but definitely noisy.
Here's a video of fireworks off in the distance at 8:45 one morning.

And here's some fireworks one evening on the other side of the lake, with the full moon above. Notice how close they are to the buildings!
